Intensive Russian Language Course (intermediate level)

6. Course profile

The intermediate level is intended for students with a good command of Russian. Thematically this course is based on socio-cultural material and includes information on Russian history and geography. In addition to a purely pragmatic purpose, the illustrative material aims at broadening the student’s knowledge of Russian culture.

City trip, the Volga journey, visits to Stalin’s Bunker, Observation Platform, Local Lore museum, trying traditional national cuisine; welcome and farewell parties; out of cities trips, beach activities (swimming and getting suntanned)

700 euro (incl. visa invitation letter, post expenses, tuition fee, accommodation, two meals a day (breakfast and lunch) and cultural program)

17. Accommodation conditions:

Three beds hotel rooms (with a toilet and a shower) in the very centre of the city, a five minutes’ walk from the university and the Volga river (breakfast, business lunch in nearby restaurants is provided, group transfer from the airport to the hotel are included)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The intermediate level is intended for students with a good command of Russian. Thematically this course is based on socio-cultural material and includes information on Russian history and geography. In addition to a purely pragmatic purpose, the illustrative material aims at broadening the student’s knowledge of Russian culture.

Objectives

- To broaden linguistic and cultural boundaries

- to become familiar with stylistic differentiation of the Russian language (formal, bookish, neutral, slang, terminology)

- to become familiar with different functional styles (fiction, fairy-tales, jokes, newspaper and journalistic articles, etc.)

- to master oral and written expression in Russian

- to become familiar with well-known Russian writers

- to produce different types of texts

- Russian industrious and cultural centers (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara, etc.)

Methodology

The contents of the programme will be organized in several units which are arranged as follows:

- preparation (set phrases, clichés, words and expressions occurring in the texts)

- a text or a dialog, based on definite lexical and grammatical themes dealt with in the unit concerned

- notes on Russian history, geography and culture relevant to the text and the dialogue

- exercises of different types: observation exercises, situational exercises (based on visual presentation or speech stimulus, communicative exercises, substitution exercises). Some exercises are followed by creative assignments

Each unit includes supplementary material for the student’s study: texts based on Russian history, geography and culture.

Activities

- reading different types of texts

- applying knowledge of the way the language works

- analyzing stylistic variants of the language and different meanings of words

- writing formal and informal letters

Teaching materials

Students will be provided with copies of texts for classroom use and supplementary materials for home study.
