Samara State Teacher's Training University (SSTTU)

History: The University was founded in 1911. Nowadays it has 14 faculties, training teachers in 17 majors for gymnasiums, lyceums, colleges, secondary schools, etc. SSTTU holds the 6th place among Pedagogical Universities of Russia in the list of Ministry of Education.

Location: in the center of Samara city on the Volga river.

Number of students: 10700

Number of post-graduate students: 198

Total number of staff: 752

Staff having Academic degrees: 409

Majors in History, Psychology, Russian Language and Russian Literature, Arts and Music, Foreign Languages, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Physical Training, Pronunciation Correction, Journalism (Fluent Russian is obligatory).

Specific Specialties for overseas students: Russian Language; Methods of Teaching Russian; Russian Literature; Methods of Teaching Literature; Russian History; English (German, French) as a foreign language, Physical Training. (Everyday Russian is encouraged).

Training levels and duration:
Higher Education diploma - 5 year (approximately equivalent to Doctoral Degrees);
post-graduate course - 3 years (the degree of Candidate of Science, approximately equivalent to Doctoral Degree).
Post-doctoral course - 3 years (the degree of Doctor of Science).

The Russian Language Faculty

Is one of the oldest faculty at the University. Since 1932 there have been training thousands of teachers of the Russian language and literature, hundreds of University professors and dozens of Doctors of Science.

The department consists of seven chairs:

  • Russian classic literature,
  • Russian XX century literature and Methods of teaching literature,
  • Foreign literature,
  • Linguistics,
  • Russian language,
  • Languages of the Volga Region,
  • Linguistics and culture.

    Nowadays students are taught by 10 Doctors of Science, 36 Candidate of Science and Associate professors.

    The following majors are available:

  • Russian language and Russian literature;
  • Journalism;
  • Russian language and literature for foreigners;

    Post-graduate students do their researches in Russian and Foreign Literature, History and Theory of the Russian Language, Methods of Teaching Russian Language as foreign language, theory and History of Education.

    Faculty of History

    This department was founded in 1929. It consists of four departments: Russian History; Archeology and Ancient History; World History and Theory of Education. The staff includes 6 Doctors of Science and 16 Candidates of Science.

    In the course of study they have practice in museums, archives, archeological sites and secondary schools. At the faculty students are trained to become highly qualified teachers of History and productive researchers. E.g., among the faculties and students achievements discovery of nine new archeological cultures in the Lower Volga Region might be mentioned.

    The best graduate students can continue their post-graduate studies at the faculty. There is a dissertation council where degrees of Candidate of Science (PhD equivalent) are awarded.

    Faculty of Biology and Chemistry

    This department was founded in 1963. It trains teachers for all types of secondary schools and colleges. The majors are in Biology, Chemistry, and Geography. There is an Academician of Russian Science Academy, 10 professors, more than 50 Associate professors in the staff.

    There are 6 chairs:

  • anatomy ;
  • man's physiology and hygiene;
  • botany;
  • geography;
  • zoology;
  • general biology;
  • chemistry;
  • methods of teaching.

    The faculty also has agricultural and biological laboratory, a zoological museum (with 12500 pieces including 60 items of the International Red Book); Centre for environment protection, etc.

    The faculty is known for their researches the Middle Volga fauna; paleogeomorphology of the foundation and the lower part of sedimentary cover in the Russian continental plateau; central mechanisms of breath regulation; innovative technology of chemistry teachers training; design and development of the State National Park "Samara Bend"; invention "Biological means of waste water purification"; numerable patents on environment protection.

    Faculty of Psychology

    Was founded in 1993. Annual enrollment is 100 daytime. Nowadays students are taught by four Doctors of Science, dozens of Candidate of Science and Associate professors.

    The faculty consists of 5 chairs:

  • Social psychology
  • Psychology of a man
  • Psychology of Education
  • Age Psychology
  • Organizational psychology

    Dean - Professor Garnik Akopov, the first Doctor of Psychology in Samara Region.

    The faculty has many international contacts, it hosts and takes part in Russian and international events (conferences, seminars, symposiums). The faculties hold certified seminars, master classes, and group therapy. Annually they win in different kinds of programs, that helps them to do their researches in many aspects of modern psychology (e.g., cross-cultural psychology, psychology of elder people, psychology of computer users).

    The department has post-graduate courses. There is a dissertation council where degrees of Candidate of Science (PhD equivalent) are awarded.

    Faculty of Foreign Languages

    Was founded in 1937. Students are trained to become teachers of two foreign languages (English and German, French and English, German and English). Annual enrollment is 140 students

    There are three departments (English, German and French) and five chairs:

  • English Language Chair
  • English Philology Chair
  • French Chair
  • German Chair
  • Education theory and Psychology

    The faculty staff is engaged in research on linguistics, cross-cultural communication, English and American Studies, German Studies, French Studies. The faculty has many international contacts, it hosts and takes part in Russian and international events, publishes monographs and books in co-authoring with their foreign colleagues.

    The faculty has a dissertation council where degrees of Candidate of Science (Germanic Languages) are awarded.

    New forms of training are successfully developed, such as second higher education (3 years of study), linguistic college (3 years).

    The department of Physics and Mathematics

    The department of Physics and Mathematics was founded in 1930. Since there have been working a number of doctors of science, and now there is a doctoral school where you can get a Doctoral degree. The department prepares teachers of Mathematics, Physics or both Mathematics and Physics. There is also a specialization "A teacher of Informatics". The highly qualified stuff works not only for teaching students, but they are also productive researchers. A number of patents for newly discovered phenomena is awarded to the faculty members every year.

    Department of Sports and Physical Training

    Department of Sports and physical training. It teachers students for being trainers or teachers of PT at secondary schools. Lots of popular sportsmen are getting higher qualification and improving their knowledge at the Institute. Among them there are some Olympic champions (shooting, bicycle), World champions (at box, parachuting, swimming and bicycle) and Europe champions (at box, and parachuting). At World Students' Sport Games in 2000 the student of the faculty won at the Figure Skating competition.
